Introduction

Preference sets and the host list

JET 3270 allows multiple configurations. Each configuration is a preference set. Preference sets can be changed, created, duplicated and deleted by selecting "Edit Preference Sets..." from the Preferences menu. The host a JET 3270 window is connected to determines which preference set is used for that window. JET 3270 has a host list which lists hosts and their preference sets. It can be viewed and edited by selecting "Edit Host List..." from the Preferences menu.

Default preference set

If the host list does not specify a preference set for a host then the default preference set is used. The default preference set is changed from the Edit Preference Sets dialog by selecting the desired preference set and clicking "Make Default".

Source of preferences

JET 3270 has two sources for preferences, the user specified preferences (changed using the Change Preference Set screen and saved in the saved preferences file) and the applet parameters on the web page specified by the web server administrator. JET 3270 generally resolves this conflict by deferring to the user. It allows the user to specify whether preferences come from the Changed Preference Set screen (by selecting "This Page") or the applet parameters on the web page (by selecting "Web Page"). See Preference groups for more information.

The exceptions to this are the following applet parameter only preferences:

  • disable_connect
  • disable_new_window
  • host
  • port
There is no way for the user to specify values for disable_connect and disable_new_window. They are not members of any preference group so are not effected by the user selecting "This Page" for any preference group. The host and port applet parameters determine the initial host, but the user can override the effect of these unless disable_connect is yes.

Other preferences can be specified in the web page, but the web server administrator does not absolutely control these preferences since they will be ignored if the user has specified their preferences as the source for the relevant preference group (by selecting This Page).

Preference groups

Within each preference set the individual preferences are organised into the following groups:

  • Colours
  • Font
  • Telnet Options
  • Logon
  • Keyboard
  • Screen Layout
  • Other Display
  • Sound
  • Print
  • Debug
  • Help
For each group there is a preference such as "Colours Preferences from" on the Change Preference Set window which can be set to either "This Page" or "Web Page". The window is accessed from the Edit Preference Sets dialog by selecting a preference set and clicking "Change...". If "This Page" is selected the preferences in that group come from those specified by the user on that page of the window. If "Web Page" is selected the preferences come from the web page JET 3270 is loaded from. The web page specifies preferences using applet parameters. "This Page" must be selected before the preferences can be changed on the Change Preference Set window.

Connection menu and aliases

JET 3270 can list a host on the Connection menu to make connecting quicker. Selecting a host from the Connection menu will initiate a connection to it. A host already on the host list can be added to the Conneciton menu by selecting it on the Edit Host List dialog, clicking "Change...", selecting "Show on Connection menu" then clicking OK. A host not already listed can be added by clicking "New..." on the Edit Host List dialog, entering the host's name and port number, selecting "Show on Connection menu" then clicking OK. If an alias is specifed for a host then the host will be listed by the alias on the Connection menu.
